The South Florida Branch of the American Public Works Association (SFLAPWA) develops and supports the people, agencies, and organizations that plan, build, maintain, and improve our communities working together with the APWA and its membership contribute to a higher and more sustainable quality of life.

The South Florida Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA), is designed to assist those individuals who are pursuing a career in the public works field. Furthering understanding of a wide range of disciplines from engineering, public administration, or continuing education for career enhancement of public agency employees is the philosophy of the Association. This assistance in education promotes and ensures a continuation of the high level of skill, talent, and professionalism that is the pride of every member.

SCHOLARSHIP CATEGORIES


The SFLAPWA sponsors a scholarship program for candidates in two (2) categories:

  1. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM: Awarded to a college student who is currently enrolled and must provide proof of acceptance or enrollment in an accredited college, university, or community college, seeking an Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor Degree in a government related or public works related field. Up to $500 Award.
  1. GRADUATE PROGRAM: Awarded to a person who is currently enrolled and pursuing an advanced degree in Public Works Engineering, Public Administration or other public works related field at an accredited college or university. Up to $500 Award.

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY


  • Scholarships are awarded for one year only. Applicants must apply for award each year.
  • Award amounts are determined each year by the South Florida Branch Board of Directors. Funds shall be used for fees including, but not limited to, tuition and books at an accredited private college, state university or college.
  • Applicants must provide proof of a current enrollment in an accredited college, university, or community college. Applicants need to be employees of a public works agency.
  • Upon request, recipients shall furnish receipts to the Scholarship Committee, validating proper use of funds. Failure to furnish receipts, or spending funds on unapproved items, will result in the applicant being ineligible for future funding.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE


The SFLAPWA Scholarship Committee Chairperson or Branch Chair will inform each applicant, prior to the Luncheon Meeting, as to the status of their application and the date the scholarship will be awarded.. The application procedure is as follows:

A. Obtain an application in any of the following ways:
  • Contact the SFLAPWA Scholarship Committee Chairperson and request an application.
  • Visit the SFLAPWA website at https://sfapwa.net/ and download a copy.
B. Complete the application. Include all requested information. Incomplete applications, applications that do not include the requested documents and information, and applications not received by the submittal deadline will not be considered for award.

C. Application submittal. A scholarship application to be considered for review includes the following:

1. Complete Application, signed and dated. Electronic signatures for submittals by e-mail are acceptable.
2. Personal statement that addresses the following questions. (Personal statements should not exceed two pages in fonts no smaller than 10pt, double space).
a. Why are you interested in the field of Public Works
b. In what area of Public Works do you intend to pursue a career
c. How do you plan to learn more and be involved in the APWA?
d. How do you currently participate in your community and/or the Public Works professional community?
e. Where do you see yourself after graduation?
3. All applicants must provide a Reference Letter from a person who may be an instructor, academic counselor, public works professional, or person other than a family member, who is knowledgeable of the applicant’s interest/experience in the public works field.
D. Return the application and scanned required documentation via email or hard copy format to the South Florida Chapter Scholarship Committee Chairperson in one of the following ways:

F. Scholarships are awarded for one year only. Applicants must apply for the award each year. The actual number of scholarships awarded each year is contingent upon available Branch funds.

G. The total number of scholarships and amount awarded in each category may vary each year.

H. the SFLAPWA Branch Chair shall conduct the presentation of the scholarship award at the South Florida Branch Luncheon Meeting in the City of Tamarac on February 14, 2020. Attendance at the luncheon is strongly encouraged by the Scholarship Committee and other branch members to get to know you.

The SFLAPWA Chapter reserves the right to deny awarding any scholarships if applications are judged as failing to meet the mission of SFLAPWA and this scholarship program.
